There is no official, confirmed date for a first Mars base — anyone who gives you a firm year is selling optimism, not a schedule. What can be stated fairly is a range. 02The phases to a base

A Mars base is not one event but a sequence of them, each depending on the last. Thinking in phases rather than a single "landing date" is the clearest way to understand why the timeline is so long — and so uncertain.

Progress moves in ~2-year steps, not continuously

Earth and Mars only line up favourably for an efficient transfer about once every 26 months (the synodic period). You cannot simply launch when you are ready — you wait for the window. That cadence paces the entire programme: each phase advances roughly one launch window at a time, which is why a base is measured in decades rather than years.

03SpaceX's roadmap

SpaceX is the only organisation whose explicit goal is a self-sustaining city on Mars, flown on Starship. Its roadmap is the most aggressive — and the most frequently revised. The company has targeted uncrewed Starship landings for upcoming late-2020s launch windows, with the first crewed flight "a couple of windows" later, in the early-to-mid 2030s.

Read those targets as aspirations, not commitments. Elon Musk's stated Mars dates have slipped repeatedly over the years, and Starship is still in flight testing — it has not yet flown a crew, landed on Mars, or demonstrated the in-orbit refuelling a Mars flight requires. The direction is real; the specific years are best treated as the optimistic edge of what is possible.

04NASA's Moon-to-Mars path

NASA takes the opposite tempo: methodical, science-first, and via the Moon. Its Moon-to-Mars strategy treats a return to the lunar surface as the proving ground for the systems a Mars crew will need — deep-space life support, surface operations and long-duration health data.

The near-term step is the Artemis crewed lunar landing: Artemis III is currently targeted for no earlier than about 2027, and that milestone has itself slipped more than once. Crewed Mars missions sit far beyond it in NASA's planning — generally framed for the late 2030s to 2040s, explicitly after the Moon work matures.

SpaceX and NASA dominate the conversation, but they are not the only ones with Mars plans. China and Europe shape the timeline too — mostly through the robotic and sample-return steps that have to come before any crew.

China (CNSA)

China's Tianwen-3 Mars sample-return mission is targeted to launch around 2028 and return samples to Earth around 2031. Beyond the robotics, China has voiced long-term aspirations for crewed Mars landings in the 2030s–2040s, with some official statements citing around 2033 — again, an aspiration rather than a fixed programme.

Europe (ESA)

ESA's role is robotic science and partnership rather than a crewed programme of its own. Its ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover is targeted to launch no earlier than 2028, and Europe contributes to Mars Sample Return alongside NASA. There is no independent European crewed Mars effort — the human-landing timeline runs through NASA and SpaceX.

Every forward date above is a target or aspiration drawn from what agencies and companies currently say — not a confirmed commitment. Space schedules slip routinely, and Mars dates more than most. The order of the milestones is far more reliable than any single year attached to them.

07Why the dates keep slipping

If Mars dates feel like they never arrive, that instinct is well-founded. A crewed landing has been "about 20 years away" for most of the space age, and several forces keep pushing it back.

  • Engineering. Starship still has to mature; landing tens of tonnes safely on Mars and closing the loop on life support are unsolved at the required scale.
  • Funding cycles. Multi-decade programmes span many budgets and administrations, and priorities shift with each — a common reason milestones drift right.
  • Human-health problems. Radiation exposure and the effects of low gravity over years are still not fully understood, and no one wants to send a crew before they are.
  • The "always 20 years away" pattern. Optimistic dates announced far in advance have a long history of quietly sliding as the hard work of the near term reveals its true cost.

A base is unlocked by a checklist of capabilities, not by a calendar. Watch these rather than the announced years — when they start being demonstrated, the timeline firms up. Until then, every date stays a target.
